On their journey to find their way home they must use their powers to fight an army, a feral band of vampire-like people, giant stone men, and a host of virulent creatures. But their are humorous times as well such as: when they meet the cowboy, the birdman, and the clown. While on a church invite to an upcoming revival the assistant pastor and two children encounter a cantankerous old man sitting on his front porch swing. The old man demands that they stay off his property. He is not interested in what they have to say. Against the wishes of the assistant pastor twelve-year-old Emily Teagle strode up to the front porch to give the man a religious track. In anger, the man throws the track on the floor. The assistant pastor takes Emily’s hand and they leave.
Emily returns the next day and offers to cut the man’s grass. At first, he refuses, but she is relentless. Later, she learns that his name is Buck. Through her stubbornness a close relationship begins to form. As time goes by Emily learns of the man’s fractured life that has brought him to where he is. With her help and a determination to follow God’s leading she sets out to help Buck mend his life. For a time, things go well, but then tragedy strikes and it seems that Buck’s past is about to repeat itself. THE OLD MAN AND THE GIRL REVIEW. This heartwarming story is fiction but could easily be about real life. Once I started reading it I could hardly put it down. The principal characters represent experiences and relationships with which many of us can identify. I am confident that elementary aged youngsters all the way through senior adults will find the book to be most interesting and for sure, inspiring. However, let me offer a word of suggestion as the story is being read. Do not do as many do when reading a novel. By that I mean, refrain from turning to the back and reading how the story ends before beginning at the start and reading through the final chapter! That is to say, read it from beginning to end to get the full impact of the story. I really enjoyed the narrative and recommend it most highly. Congratulations Gary Martin on writing such a captivating description of a sad, old man and a thoughtful, caring, and energetic young girl. B.
